   VIETNAMESE RICE

   Rice production in Vietnam in the Mekong and Red River deltas is important to the food supply in the country and national economy.
   20 years ago Vietnam imported rice, then from 1990 to 2005, its production has tripled and stabilized. Now Vietnam is one of worlds richest agricultural regions and is the second-largest (after Thailand) exporter worldwide and the worlds seventh-largest consumer of rice.
   Mekong Delta and the Red River delta are often compared with a curved yoke with two baskets of rice, one in the north of the Red River Delta, the second - in the south to the Mekong Delta. It is not only the rice granary of Vietnam, but also of global importance. A total of 12 provinces constitute the Mekong Delta, popularly known as the - Rice Bowl - of Vietnam, which contain some 17 million people and 80% of them are engaged in rice cultivation.
Rice production in the Mekong delta has seen phenomenal increase in recent years, though in some years drought conditions have impeded this growth. This increase is attributed to planting of modern early maturing rice varieties, better management, appropriate Legal Constructs by the Government. Forty two IRRI researched varieties of rice were released for adoption in the Mekong Delta and according to IRRI sources these varieties cover 60% of the irrigated rice-growing area in the delta.
Rice is a staple of the national diet and is seen as a "gift from God", and rice - one of the main export items.
In recent years, Vietnam participates in international cooperation in rice cultivation.
The project aims at improving the quality and productivity of rice crops in those countries, where the rice would Growing faster with higher yields in dry climate with a rather sudden changes in temperature, or on flooded fields.
During 10 months of 2013 Vietnam exported 5.7 million tons of rice; approximately 80% of exports go to African countries.
